Dear Madame,
There is a girl I like.
She is different, unusual, unique. She’s also kind of pretty and smart. (Okay, she’s REALLY pretty.)
I watch her every day in second period. She likes to read, and she has a journal she writes in too, and there is this feather-tip pen she uses to take notes with. Ms. Shanahan mostly ignores her, even though she sits in the front.
I want to know what she is writing. I want to know what she thinks of the stories in those paperback books, which she goes through like wildfire.
I don’t know how to tell her how I feel.
Do you have any recommendations for me?
Sincerely,
Candace Chickapow
Dear Candace,
Well, you haven’t told me how you feel, so how are you going to tell her?
In what way do you like her, Candace?
Is it a girl crush among two friends, a girl you want to get to know because you want to bond, hang out, watch videos? Or do you want to kiss her?
Those are two entirely conversations, you see.
I have a suspicion that you want to kiss her, and that you like her in a romantic way, so here is my suggestion:
Talk to her about music.
See what kind of music she likes.
Maybe you can play some music when you’re near her, so she can hear, and she’ll say, “Ooh, I like that song.”
Maybe you can follow her on social media and connect there about common interests around music.
I don’t know if you are aware of this, but there was this author who lived a while back who was a sort of philosopher/seer/truth-teller, and his name was Aldous Huxley. He wrote Brave New World, which high school kids are often required to read. But he also wrote The Perennial Philosophy, which is about various spiritual traditions, and the common threads that run through all things. He shared in that book—or another, I’m not sure which—that music is the closest you get to God’s artistic expression.
And forgive me for using the word God. Sometimes I like the word, sometimes I don’t. Let’s call it Shakti. Let’s call it Essence. Let’s call it Source, like the shamans do.
Music is the thing, baby. Music is the magic!
Music will get you through almost anything, and the people who make the music get super close to God in the making, in the playing. It is about presence, and being in the moment, and letting your body vibrate and hum.
When your body is feeling like that, you don’t get too lost in your mind, in thoughts and storylines that take you away from truth. You just feel the truth, in your bones, in your fibers, and it is wonderful and so good for you. (Except angry music, but I guess there’s a place for that, too? Sometimes? Kind of. I’d have to listen to it and vet it for you to know for sure.)
Anyway, if you can connect about music, see how things flow from there.
Let me know how it goes.
Sincerely,
Madame Rose
P.S. I’d love to get one of those feather pens your girlfriend has…tell me where she got it. Just say you’re asking for a friend. (Wink wink.)
