“Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”
“Sir, if you have carried him way, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
–John 20:15
Loyalty. Friendship. Sticking by someone, even when things get ugly.
Now, more than ever during the pandemic, we are forced to look at our lives, our choices, our wounds, our worries.
We are pushed to find our tribe, the people who stick by us, again and again.
What does it mean to be a friend?
I was having this conversation with a couple yesterday, who I’ve been coaching since December.
They are beautiful people, honest about their personal struggles, as well as open to whatever modalities can bring them closer together to create a healthy and sustainable partnership.
I shared with them that for me, True Friendship is unique, special, and frankly, rare.
We meet many people in this life. Who is someone who will stick by you, who will stick up for you to others, but will also call you to task when you’re doing something untoward?
In my divorce years ago, I remember the way so many people stayed silent when they saw something bad happening. They were afraid to speak up or speak out. Perhaps we worry that telling a friend something she or he doesn’t want to hear will make that person cut us off, and we’ll be abandoned and alone, even worse off than we were before.
And if someone does cut you off for speaking your mind, or sharing your truth, or being who you are…? What of that?
That person is not a friend, clearly.
A friend, like Mary Magdalene in the excerpt above, sticks up for you, sticks by you, and also calls you to task about what you may be doing that is unhealthy and unhelpful for you. The friend still loves you, even though they acknowledge your flaws.
This is the way Jesus loves, and forgive me if you’re a person who gets annoyed when I say the name Jesus. (I know some people are like that.)
So replace the name “Jesus” with God. Replace the name “God” with “Goddess.” Call it Shakti. Call it Essence. Call it Holy.
Call it Mother.
Mother Love is the kind of loving energy that can point out your flaws, when that’s necessary, and loves you right through them, all the while.
May we all be so lucky, to have friends who act as mothers, and mothers who act as friends.
My preference for healing and coaching work is word of mouth, but I am posting my daily openings to Instagram. If you feel like stopping by my office for a session, or to talk about coaching packages, you can visit my website and give me a call, or check Instagram in the mornings (@janamarierose) to see what is available.
You can also stop by just to chat. That’s nice, too.
